WHY ORGANIC COTTON?

As we go further into our eco journey we deep dived into some research about organic cotton. www.textileexchange.org is an amazing organisation working tirelessly for 15 yrs - positively impacting the climate through accelerating the use of preferred materials across the global textile industry. We have gathered some info that we thought you’d be interested in 😊🌱

Did you know, that to produce a conventional t-shirt it would take approx. 2186 gallons of water?

To produce an organic cotton t-shirt it just takes 186 gallons of water.

The potential environmental savings by switching to organic cotton look something like this with a reduction of:

  • 46% to global warming
  • 70% to acidification of land and water
  • 91% of blue water consumption
  • 62% of primary energy demand

‘Textile Exchange’ estimated that organic cotton climate-change-related-impact-savings are approximately:

  • 218B litres of water
  • 288.7 m KM of energy
  • 92.5m KG of co2
  • 315,030 KG of hazardous pesticides
  • 40.9 KG of chemical fertilisers and no use of GMO seeds

... if all of this wasn’t enough ‘Textile Exchange’ have carried out a sustainability assessment and found the following about organic cotton:

  • 65% of (organic) producer groups have fair trade or decent work policies
  • 88% of producer groups grow crops for additional income
  • 91% of producer groups encourage female participation
  • 84% of producer groups report community benefits associated with organic cotton
  • 96% producer groups compost
  • 96% of producer groups harvest rainwater

Sustainable fashion is where it is at people, it helps that they are as gorgeous as this ;)
